Horários do Funchal started this partnership with shops in Curral das Freiras located in the Municipality of Câmara de Lobos on 5th of November and they signed a protocol to foster mutual promotion of the public transport and the commerce in Curral das Freiras. At present time there are already 5 “friends” in Curral das Freiras. To benefit of a discount or a gift, the public transport users only have to show their tickets to the “friends” shops. These “friends” have the image of “Public transport friend” in their front door. Horários do Funchal is preparing also a dedicated website for this campaign, where it will be possible to identify each “friend” and discover how to get there by bus. Also will be available information for mobile phones and through facebook page. Now it’s time to find more “friends” in Madeira!

More opportunities for tourists

More opportunities for tourists

Horários do Funchal chose the 3 most appealing places in Madeira served by Public transport service and starts to sell the public transport ticket in pilot hotels. This was the first step to integrate the urban service, where the main hotels are located, and the interurban service, where many touristic places are located.

The interurban public service was usually seen as a transport only for residents. Horários do Funchal wants to change this idea, and promote the interurban routes for tourists. During the SEEMORE project Horários do Funchal had developed new ways to promote public transport service with a higher level of information, but with different tariffs and buses for urban and interurban service, the use of these services could be not so easy for tourists. Therefore it was selected the 3 most interesting destinations and prepared a package with all that a tourist need. These new destinations are being sold in two hotels (two of the best Tourist Kit sellers), and the package includes: • 1 GIRO ticket card, valid for 2 journeys within the urban network; • 2 interurban tickets, each one valid for a single journey to the selected destination; • Timetables for each bus routes.

Not only do, but also explain

Not only do, but also explain

It’s important to develop new tools to promote and inform about public transport services, but we can not only do it, we have to explain how to use these tools and what are the advantages for people. So we launch a training campaign to teach people how to use the journey planner, the mobile apps and all the other tools. For a successful implementation this step is essential to have positive promotion by mouth and to contact directly the tourism professionals.

During the SEEMORE project Horários do Funchal had developed new tools to make the use of public transport easier. To achieve this target, Horários do Funchal decided to contact tourism professionals that daily contact tourists. A total of 96 professionals have received training about the new tools. These professionals include 2 hotel directors, 13 tourism office technicians, 31 payshop agents (retailers that sell PT tickets), and 48 municipality of Funchal technicians. The measure was successful and well welcomed among the trainees. On these good results the PT Operator board has decided to prepare a training plan for this target group to refresh knowledge about public transport services on an annual basis. This means that this measure will be sustained beyond the project lifetime creating a new habit among the tourism professional.

The audio guide for Curral das Freiras, works on a free application Audiotrip for smartphones, created by GRUPA 7POINT. The users only have to download the application and the trip, then put the headphones and enjoy. The trip “A journey to the heart of the Island” has 10 points that gives the opportunity to the users to hear some interesting stories about the island. The application automatically starts describing the specific place just the moment the user reach it. Promoting sustainable mobility options at a tourist event in Funchal

Promoting sustainable mobility options at a tourist event in Funchal

Funchal is making public transport to events more accessible and sustainable by rearranging public transport services to attract tourists and locals alike
>> read more

In this Holiday season, Santa could have been surprised to see that SEEMORE is on the move to spread the Christmas spirit by facilitating the usage of environmentally friendly modes of transport for leisure journeys. A new and interesting event was held in the Funchal harbor: Christmas in the harbor, during the 18th of December evening. Locals and tourists were invited for Madeira wine and chocolate tastings in this attractive regional mini market. To cheer up everyone, traditional folklore was also organized. Many took part in this celebration and enjoyed an astonish overview of the Christmas lights all over Funchal bay. Thanks to SEEMORE project, this mini market was supplied by a high frequency public transport route which connected the city centre and the hotel seaside area to the place of the festivities, the Funchal harbor. This mobility option did not exist before and was created notably to address a peak of demand during the event by means of a deviation to the harbor of a public transport regular route. As for the promotion campaign, leaflets were distributed at the hotels and handed out to tourists so as to encourage them to get deep into the local celebrations and spirit and to travel to the harbor by bus. More than 100 passengers have chosen to go by bus, rather than by private transport, contributing to a successful and low emission event.
